Mobile / Desktop Switching ?

What is the recommended way to:

 

1) Detect if your displaying on Mobile or Desktop ?

2) Switch to the appropriate version of the application ?

 

ie.  It would be nice if I could give 1 URL and the pageload redirect to http://mysite/m for mobile if required.
